Learning your pattern
How do I quit porn without relying on willpower?
Strong self-control looks like fewer fights, not more wins. The people who seem to have the most willpower mostly arrange their lives so they need it less often. You can do the same, starting tonight.
Fewer fights, not more willpower
In one study, 205 adults carried a device that beeped at random times for a week, and at each beep they reported what they wanted and whether it clashed with their goals. People with higher self-control had fewer of those clashes and did less resisting, not more. The researchers concluded that good self-control works partly by avoiding temptation in the first place. Each fight you skip is a win that needs no willpower.
Change the setting
Habits lean on their setting: the room, the hour, the device. When students moved to a new university and their surroundings changed a lot, their old habits broke, and what they did followed their own intentions more. You do not need to move. Changing one part of your hardest setting weakens the cue.
- Phone in bed: move the charger out of the bedroom.
- Idle evenings: plan the first hour after dinner.
- Certain apps or sites: log out, delete, or add a filter.
- Home alone late: move those hours somewhere else when you can.
Decide ahead of time
An if-then plan moves the decision to a calm moment, so the hard moment does not have to decide anything. A large review of many studies found that people who made if-then plans followed through on their goals more than people who only set the goal. At 1 AM, you only have to follow the plan you already made.
One thing to do tonight
Write one if-then plan for your hardest moment, so small you could do it half asleep: “If I am in bed and reach for my phone, then I stand up and get a glass of water.”
