Learning your pattern

Why do I watch porn when I am stressed, bored or lonely?

Often it is less about pleasure and more about relief. When a day is hard or an evening is empty, porn shows up like an exit sign from the feeling. The relief is real, and it is short. Once you know which feeling you are leaving, you can meet it another way.

From pleasure to relief

The I-PACE model pulls together research on addictive habits, including problem porn use. It describes how, over time, a habit tends to be driven less by pleasure and more by getting away from bad feelings, while cues pull harder. That is why the urge so often shows up after a long day, an argument, or a quiet, empty evening.

Relapse research on alcohol and other drugs found the same pattern: negative moods like anger, anxiety and boredom came before the most relapses.

Name the feeling

Putting a feeling into words turns the volume down. In a brain-scan study, when people put an emotion into a word, activity in the brain’s alarm center was lower. When an urge starts, try “I notice I feel ___.” A rough guess is fine:

Meet the need, and fill the empty hour

Lonely? In a survey of 1,247 adults, loneliness and porn use rose together, so a step toward a real person works on the habit from the other side. Bored? Do not wait to feel like doing something. A treatment called behavioral activation has people get active first and feel better after; in a large trial for depression, it did about as well as talk therapy a year later. Put one small, real activity in your hardest hour, and check how you feel after, not before.

One thing to do tonight

When the next urge starts, say “I notice I feel ___,” and pick one thing for that feeling: a walk for stress, a text or call for lonely, sleep for tired, ten minutes of something real for bored.

How Daybook helps

When you log an urge or a slip in Daybook, you can note what set it off. Over the weeks, your log shows which feeling comes up most, and your plan can aim at that feeling, not only at the urge. The care tools in SOS are there for the moment the feeling hits.
